Neurology
Neurology is a sub-specialty brand of medicine that deals with diseases related to the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscle. Our neurologists emphasize on getting accurate diagnosis based on detailed clinical history and physical examination. We endeavor to utilise, wherever possible, the latest and reliable neuroimaging as well as neurophysiological techniques for both diagnostics and treatment purposes.
Acute Stroke Care
Working closely with other VNC specialists to provide comprehensive care, we provide rapid assessment for patients suspected of stroke starting from the emergency department. We actively advocate for stroke thrombolysis (clot-busting drugs) in eligible stroke patients within the treatment window and if the scans show they are needed.
Our aim is to provide safe thrombolysis treatment to maximise chance of functional recovery after a single event of ischaemic stroke. Our team also emphasises secondary stroke prevention and subsequent post-stroke rehabilitation and recovery.
General Neurological Disorders
VNC cares for patients with various neurological disorders and we offer comprehensive in-patient and out-patient evaluation as well as treatment advice. We incorporate neuroimaging and neurophysiological tests wherever appropriate to obtain accurate diagnosis. Common neurological conditions are as follows (but not limited to):
- Facial pain and weakness such as Bell’s palsy, Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Migraine and other headache disorders
- Nerve and muscle diseases including myasthenia gravis (MG)
- Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders such as cervical dystonia, hemifacial spasm and tremor
- Epilepsy
- Inflammatory diseases of the brain such as neuromyelitis optical (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Antibody-related/Autoimmune encephalitis
- Infection of the central nervous system (CNS)
- Neurocognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s dementia
Neurodiagnostic Lab
VNC’s neurodiagnostic lab provides comprehensive investigational tools particularly for diseases related to nerve and muscle as well as epilepsy in order to better understand the disease process and for accurate diagnosis.
Incorporating basic and advanced neurophysiological techniques, VNC’s Neurodiagnostic lab provides these following electrodiagnostic studies (EDX):
- Electroencephalography (EEG)-important tool in managing patients with epilepsy
- Nerve conduction study (NCS)- to investigate individual nerves including carpal tunnel disease
- Small fibre study- part of the investigational tool in painful neuropathy
- Electromyography (EMG)- as part of EDX to further study the nerve and an important test in detecting muscle disorders
- Single fibre EMG- this is an advanced EMG and also the most sensitive test for myasthenia gravis (MG)
- Repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS)
- Evoked potentials- VEP/SSEP/BAER which is a valuable tool in assessing sensory system
Our Neurodiagnostic lab also offers neuromuscular ultrasound service which is a useful adjunct investigational tool in nerve diseases particularly in detecting structural abnormalities. We often use EMG-guided and/or ultrasound-guided approaches for more accurate treatment when dealing with nuerological conditions.
