Upper gastrointestinal surgery is a treatment for diseases of the parts of the body involved in digestion, including the oesophagus, stomach, duodenum, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, and small intestine. Examples of procedures include gastrectomy, oesophagectomy, and minimally invasive laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
Surgery may be used to remove cancerous or noncancerous growths or damaged parts of the body, such as the intestine. Upper gastrointestinal surgeons frequently advise and perform endoscopic evaluations of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Usually, minor surgical procedures are used to screen and diagnose problems of the digestive system.
Gastrointestinal conditions that may be treated with surgery include appendicitis, colon cancer, diverticular disease, gallbladder disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hernia, inflammatory bowel disease, and rectal prolapse.
In addition, obesity can also be treated through gastric bypass (bariatric surgery), which is usually performed by a specialist in bariatric surgery.
